This past August, SMART conducted its first rider survey to help understand who our riders are, why they ride and where they are traveling. Over the course of four days, SMART surveyed all routes and gathered a total of 449 completed surveys. This 29-question survey provided information that will be used to improve advertising and help in future planning efforts.
When asked why current riders use the SMART system, respondents gave three main reasons for why they ride. The first reason is that SMART provides access to those (51% of riders) who do not own a vehicle. The second main incentive for riding SMART is the cost savings, as household transportation costs continue to rise, SMART is happy to provide free local service and low fares to south Portland, Salem, and Canby. Lastly, riding SMART is more convenient and less stressful for people than driving. SMART pulses all connections with TriMet WES to ensure transfers between systems are seamless.
