Project to Upgrade Boeckman Road Gets Underway

City Councilors joined project leaders for a ceremonial groundbreaking on Boeckman Rd.

August 17, 2023 –  Yesterday, the City of Wilsonville officially broke ground on a comprehensive project to upgrade Boeckman Road to current urban standards between Canyon Creek Road and Stafford Road.

The Boeckman Road Corridor Improvement Project, which is currently scheduled to be completed by the end of 2024, adds landscaping, pedestrian amenities, and bicycle infrastructure to the thoroughfare.  Notably, It removes the hazardous “Boeckman Dip,” replacing culverts with a new bridge over Boeckman Creek.

“This project demonstrates the City of Wilsonville’s commitment to significant and strategic, investment in public safety and transportation infrastructure development,” Mayor Julie Fitzgerald said. “These Improvements benefit all modes of transportation. Whether your ride, drive, cycle, or walk along Boeckman Road, your trips will be safer.”

When complete, the project also improves the intersection at Boeckman and SW Canyon Creek, adding a new modern roundabout to improve capacity and safely accommodate emergency vehicles, school buses and pedestrian traffic.

“After months of public input, data analysis, and coordination with multiple entities, we’ve designed a project that substantially upgrades this important arterial road to accommodate Wilsonville’s long-term growth,” City Engineer Zach Weigel said. “The project design has included work to develop safe alternate detour routes to mitigate the short-term impact of closing Boeckman Rd for a substantial period of time.”

The contractor for the project is Tapani|Sundt Joint Venture.

As early as next week, motorists will encounter lane closures and flaggers on the eastern end of the project area as work begins to replace the culverts that carry Meridian Creek under Boeckman Road. Crews will also begin preliminary utility work and work to install a temporary traffic signal at the Stafford Road and 65th Avenue intersection.

That temporary traffic signal is necessary to accommodate an expected increase in trafficwhen Boeckman Road is temporarily closed to all traffic -- between Canyon Creek and Sherman Drive -- for construction of a new bridge. Closing the road is the fastest, least environmentally impactful, and safest way to build the new bridge, according to thorough engineering analysis.

Scheduled to begin in November, the road closure is anticipated to be in place for about one year. During this period, all east-west through traffic on Boeckman will be detoured via Stafford Road or Canyon Creek Road to Elligsen Road.
