DEI Speaker Series: Fleeing Displacement and Escaping El Salvador’s Civil War

Calendar Date:
Thursday, February 1, 2024 - 6:00pm to 7:30pm

The City’s successful DEI Speaker Series returns in 2024 with the first of three compelling lectures programmed by the City's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee to help community members better understand the lived experience of historically marginalized community members.

On Thursday, Feb. 1, at 6 pm at the Wilsonville campus of Clackamas Community College (29353 SW Town Center Loop E), the series returns with “Fleeing Displacement and Escaping El Salvador’s Civil War for Life in America,” presented by Elizabeth Brashear.

Brashear shares details of her harrowing journey to the U.S. border during El Salvador’s violent Civil War, and her acclimation to life in America. Her daughter Karla, a local immigration attorney, provides context on the recent influx of new migrants, most of whom are fleeing persecution in their home countries and desperately seeking asylum in the United States.

DEI Speakers Series events are free, and include light refreshments. Look for more information soon on future events to be held March 6 and April 4.

The City is once again partnering with Willamette Falls Studios to record DEI Speaker Series events for more community members to learn and enjoy. Several previous talks can be viewed at bit.ly/DEI_Speakers
