Walk+Roll May Challenge
Calendar Date:
May is Walk+Roll Challenge month. The Walk+Roll May Challenge encourages kids and families to stay active and healthy by walking, biking and rolling to school. It is great for us, our kids, and for the community.
Many schools choose to celebrate on National Bike+Roll to School Day which is Wednesday, May 7, 2025. Schools are encouraged to plan events on this day, multiple days, or all month long.
The best way to celebrate this day is to walk or roll to school! You can organize a Walking School Bus, a school activity about pedestrian and bike safety or create a bicycling group.
The first-ever National Bike+Roll to School Day took place on May 9, 2012, in coordination with the League of American Bicyclists’ National Bike Month. Almost 1,000 local events in 49 states and the District of Columbia came together to encourage children to safely bicycle to school.
The event builds on the popularity of Walk+Roll to School Day, which is celebrated across the country–and the world–each October. Many communities and schools have been holding spring walk and bicycle-to-school events for years. National Bike+Roll to School Day provides an opportunity for schools across the country to celebrate and build off the energy of National Bike Month.
SMART can provide resources to help your school plan events and order free incentives.
Contact your school or SMART for more information. We often need volunteers and parent champions!
Bicycle Fairies
Ride your bike to school on Wednesday, May 7 and the Bike Fairies from SMART will visit your school. A bicycle fairy anonymously leaves safety items attached to bicycle/scooter handlebars sometime during the school day. It’s a small, but mighty, year-round incentive — a great way to keep students excited, motivated, and encouraged to ride to school!
